Darjeeling - The Most Popular Hill Station In India

Located on lesser Himalayas in West Bengal, Darjeeling is one of the major hill stations in India. Endless green carpet like tea estates, panoramic view of Himalayan mountains,


Buddhist Monasteries, the longest cable car of the continent and other surrounded picnic spots have made this as the most popular hill station of the country. It's average elevation above sea level is 2050 m and total area is 10.5 Sq.Km with the population of over 1.4 lac  When Britishers ruled India they preferred to stay here to spend summer days.

Must See Places In And Around Darjeeling

Darjeeling is surrounded by many interesting picnic spots. You need to stay for at least two or three days here to enjoy all the important points and items of this hill station.

Observatory Hill

 This is a hill located at about 8 Km away from Darjeeling. The Chowrasta square and Mall are the main attractions here. This is where one can enjoy spectacular views of snow covered mighty Himalayas. The world third highest peak Kanchenjunga and sometimes the world highest Mount Everest are visible from here on clear sky days. We can see here the oldest Buddhist Monastery that was built in 1765. There is also a temple on the top of Chowrasta square for Lord Shiva. The children visiting this place will enjoy pony riding which is another interesting item of the Chowrasta square.

Tiger Hill

Located at  an altitude of 2,555 m above sea level this is the most thrilling place of the hill station. It's lying at about 11 Km from Darjeeling and provides breathtaking views of snow capped Himalayan peaks  And One should not miss to watch sunrise from this point.

Monasteries Around Darjeeling

Many important Buddhist Monasteries are here in Darjeeling to visit.  All of them are noted for unique Buddhist architecture and great paintings on the walls. Jang Dong Palriffo Brang, Thongsa Gompa and Salugara are some famous ones. Besides these monasteries tourist can also enjoy mesmerizing beauty of  Himalayan mountains.

Surya Sen Park

An entertainment park located nearby Siliguri the Surya Sen Park also provide an exhibition on alternative energy sources. The children can have a variety of entertainments in this park. The park has been beautifully maintained with attractive plants, flowers and fountains. It'll give a great pleasure to enjoy night times in the park decorated with color lights.

Darjeeling Toy Train

This is one which offers unforgettable funny experience to the travelers  The train can hold 30 persons and starts from Siliguri. The ticket fare is Rs.200/ - per head. The tourists can enjoy wonderful natural sceneries and breathtaking views while travelling by train.

Rangit Valley Passenger Cable Car (The Longest Cable Car In Asia)

This is another great attraction of Darjeeling which offers the most thrilling and flying experience over lush green dense forest and tea estates.  It starts from the north point of Darjeeling and ends at Singla Bazar on the banks of River Rangit. It covers a total distance of  2 Km and each cable car can carry 6 persons at a fare of  Rs.40/- per head.

Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park

Of course this is very interesting item of the hill station located at about 4 Km away from Darjeeling. The zoo is carefully maintained with over 150 animal and bird species and covered an area of over 165 acres. The zoo is elevated at an altitude of 2134 m above sea level. The Snow Leopard, Red Panda, Siberian Tigers, Himalayan Bear and Tibetan Wolf are some important species of animals that can be seen here.

Senchal Lake

A charming lake of the hill station the Senchal Lake is located 10 Km south-east of the hill station. It provides the splendid natural views to the people visiting there. The lake is situated at an elevation of 2,500 m above sea level and it is the main source of drinking water for the Darjeeling town.

Getting there

Darjeeling can be reached either by road or rail. The nearest railway station is New Jalpaiguri and Siliguri is the nearest town by road. Bagdogra, Kathmandu and Gangtok are other important towns connected by road.
