Shimla, The Great Hill Station in India

Shimla
The most popular hill station of India, Shimla is the capital of Himachal Pradesh and situated on north-western Himalayan mountains at an average elevation of 2350 m above sea level. It has a population of 1.8 lacs and spreads over 25 sq.km.

When Britishers ruled India they made this place as their summer capital of Punjab state. There are many temples and palaces here which have been built in Tudorbethan and neo-Gothic styles. The visitors can enjoy stunning beauty of snow capped Himalayan mountains from this great hill station. Shimla is also famous for many sport activities like golf, scatting and horse riding.

Interesting Places In And Around Shimla

Shimla has many interesting points and surrounding suburbs to visit. The plenty of transport facilities are available to reach all the suburbs of Shimla. Let us see some important places of attraction in and around Shimla.

The Mall is a main bazaar located at the heart of town. It provides important hotels, offices, clubs, banks and tourist offices.

Himachal Pradesh State Museum is located on the Mall road where we can see old coins, sensible photographs and local handicrafts.

Jakhu hill is the highest point of Shimla where we can enjoy beautiful view of Shimla town. Here we can also see a temple for Lord Hanuman. 108 ft high statue of Lord Hanuman is specialty of the temple

 A peaceful place located 5 Km away from Shimla, Summer Hill offers splendid views of thick pine and deodar  forests and stunning snow covered Himalayan ranges. Tourists can also enjoy horse riding through surrounding thick forests.

 A large open area located in the middle of town, Ridge provides wonderful views of Himalayas. It connects important points of the hill station like the Mall, scandal point, lakkar bazaar and jakhoo.

Sanjauli is an important suburb of Shimla situated just below Jakhu hill. A tunnel made by britishers is famous here. An old Government college and Indira Gandhi Medical College are situated in this place.

Tara Devi temple is located at about 11 Km away from Shimla. Tara Devi is the prime goddess of the temple. Besides worshiping the lordess we will also have an opportunity of enjoying beauty of nature and thick forests.

Chharabra is a small village lying about 14 Km away from Shimla with an elevation of 2500 m above sea level. It's provided with wonderful views of Himalayas and pine forests

Another important point nearby Shimla, Kurfi provides magnificent views of snow covered Himalayan peaks. The place is famous for yak ride.

Naldehra situated about 22 Km away from Shimla is famous for its nine hole Golf club. Annual sipi fair is held here.

Chail is located at  49 Km away from Shimla. It's famous for a palace with wonderful architecture. This is where the world highest cricket ground is situated.

Tattapani located at about 50 Km from Shimla is noted for the hot sulphur springs with some healing powers. Here the tourists can also undergo sports activities trekking and fishing.

Located at about 51 Km away from Shimla, Arki had been the capital of erstwhile province of Baghal. The old palace here is noted for the finest wall paintings and we can also find many temples worth to visit.

Getting There

Shimla is connected by road as well as rail to the various important cities of the country. Kalka, Chandigarh, Ambala, Patiala are the nearest places connected by road. Kalka is the nearest railway station.
